Memories in Handcrafted Woodwork: The Artistry of Matt Ankney at Macon County Farmers Market

Woodworking is more than a craft for Matt Ankney. It is a lifelong passion shaped by decades of experience and a deep connection to his community. At the Macon County Farmers Market, Matt shares his skill and stories through beautifully handcrafted wooden items. His work reflects not only his talent but also the history and spirit of the place he calls home.

A Lifetime Shaped by Handcrafted Woodwork

Matt Ankney’s journey with woodworking began over forty years ago. Before settling in the mountains, he worked in Florida as a marine yacht service woodworker. His days were spent shaping, repairing, and restoring wooden parts on yachts, where precision and attention to detail were essential. This professional background gave Matt a strong foundation in craftsmanship.

During trips to the mountains with his wife, they often visited craft shows and dreamed of one day making and selling their own creations. After retiring and moving to the mountains, that dream became reality. Matt started All Things Wood, bringing his expertise and passion of handcrafted woodwork to the Macon County Farmers Market.

The Beauty of Simple Handcrafted Wooden Utensils

Among the many items Matt creates, wooden utensils hold a special place in his heart. At first glance, spoons, spatulas, and ladles may seem simple, but each piece is a unique work of art. Matt shapes every utensil by hand, sands it carefully, and finishes it with a smoothness that only years of experience can achieve.

Each utensil carries its own character. No two are exactly alike, reflecting the natural variations in the wood and the subtle differences in Matt’s handwork. These utensils are not just tools; they are pieces that bring warmth and personality to everyday cooking.

Handcrafted Woodwork with a Story

Matt sources much of his wood locally. He collects fallen trees or wood removed from yards in the community. Using a small bandsaw, he mills the wood himself, giving new life to materials that might otherwise go to waste.

Some pieces of wood come with stories. A branch from a tree that stood for decades in a neighbor’s yard, or a slab from a tree that weathered many seasons. Other pieces are simply good wood that deserves a second purpose. This connection to the local environment adds depth and meaning to Matt’s work.

Memorable Creations and Community Connections

When asked about his most memorable creation, Matt mentioned a coffee grinder he made. It was a simple item, but one that combined function with beauty. The scoop’s smooth curves and balanced weight made it a favorite for coffee lovers. This piece represents how Matt’s work blends practicality with artistry.

What stands out most to Matt about being part of the Macon County Farmers Market is the people. The market is more than a place to sell goods; it is a community hub where stories are shared, friendships are built, and local culture thrives. Matt values the connections he has made with customers and fellow vendors, who appreciate the care and history behind his wooden creations.
